Bobbie Peels Run Club!
Every Wednesday at 5:45 PM, we gather on the Bobbie Peels parklet (Queensberry St) for a casual 4 or 5km (roughly) run through the beautiful North Melbourne streets to Royal Park. Afterward, we cool down with a well-earned beer, cider, or wine from our partners at Kaiju! Beer and Ricca Terra Wines, Riverland SA. Best of all, it’s completely free to join, including the drink afterwards! Runners also receive 10% off their post run dinner; after all, running a 5k does work up an appetite.
The recent surge in running culture, highlighted by the sold-out Melbourne Marathon and achievements by local athletes like Andy Buchanan and Jessica Hull, inspired us to get involved. Our group is open to everyone, whether you're just starting your fitness journey or you're a seasoned marathoner.
Phil Gjisbers, co-owner of Bobbie Peels, is an accomplished marathon runner (2h43m PB) and ultra-marathoner (5th place in the Grampians Peaks Trail 50km race, November 2024). He’s passionate about encouraging others to take part in this sport (obsession) and aims to keep these runs held in a friendly, stress-free environment and welcome those who are only just starting out their journey as well as those experienced marathon runners. One of the aims of the group is to welcome absolutely everyone on their personal fitness journeys. “We have people who walk a bit, jog a bit, have a chat, push a pram, run with a dog. A bit of everything.”
Bobbie Peels recently has progressively grown to be a home for some niche sporting events (it’s not the traditional sports pub); from last year’s Tour de France watch parties (which will be held again this year), where every stage of the 3-week event was matched with a wine from the region and dishes like coq au vin and French onion soup, to hosting a massive crowd to watch the Paris Olympic marathons.
We’ve seen great success with this event, which is aimed at growing community spirit, making new friends, and showing that fitness and having a social drink midweek is a great way to improve one’s week.

Moreland City Soul Review

What they really need is soul.”

True Crime Walking Tour: The Crutchie Push
Take part in a true crime walking tour around North Melbourne and learn about the Crutchie Push.
From 1895 to 1915 a violent and bloodthirsty gang terrorised North Melbourne. They were one of the city's many push gangs of the time, however, the Crutchie Push would become one of the most infamous push gangs of the era for a number of fascinating reasons. The gang included a number of members who were amputees, often equipped with a crutch that they used as weapons. Their uniquely different abilities, their menacing use of the crutch as a weapon, and their barbaric antics made them one of Melbourne's most notorious gangs.
In conjunction with the release of the biography The Crutchie Push by true crime authors Roy Maloy and Deb Robinson, this immersive true crime walking tour takes you through the former heartlands of the North Melbourne’s Crutchie Push related locations.
The comic presentation and historically accurate storytelling will take you back in time.

Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle Of Rum!
This series of original A4 sized photo media collages by Melbourne artist Peter Milne revisits the iconography of pirate culture with the tired eyes of one who has lived through six decades of triumphant, late Capitalism and finds less to celebrate.
In 1950 Disney studios released a live-action adaptation of the swashbuckling classic 'Treasure Island'. This was just a few years after WWII, when democratic capitalism had beaten back tyranny and the spirit of freedom was ascendant. The Disney film created a renewed enthusiasm for pirate-related popular culture, with romantic, adventurous anti-heroes whose violence and rakish, deceitful guile were redeemed by their resolute sense of honour and justice. . The artist now sees this kind of mythology as more a testament to toxic masculinity and naked greed than any reflections of chivalrous ideals.
The resultant works are surreal and, as always with Milne’s work, extremely funny and unnerving.
Exhibition dates: Thursday March 20 - Sunday March 30, 2025
Gallery hours Thurs- Fri 3-7 pm, Saturdays 1-7 pm, Sundays 1-5 pm.
