Bushbaby and Cesco

The team from the DOT are back with two of the leading young exponents Bushbaby and Cesco alongside some of Naarm’s leading selectors Isgwan, Niix and Kiva.

Emerging onto the scene in 2015, Bushbaby, a Brighton-based DJ and producer, has embarked on a remarkable musical journey. His sonic evolution has been a captivating ride, as he seamlessly navigates the realms of bass, garage, and house. Over the years, his sound has matured and morphed, reflecting his innovative approach to music production.

Never one to limit himself to a particular genre, Cesco has established a name for himself in the spheres of drum and bass, dubstep, and UKG. Cesco’s multi-genre approach has certainly paid off. In 2022 alone, he has performed up and down the UK (including a set at Alix Perez’s XOYO residency) and released EPs on 1985 Music, and Pineapple Records.

Wine Women Whiskey - Dakota East

Wine Women Whiskey - Dakota East

Earnest and soulful, Country/Indie artist Dakota East travels both on a lonesome mountain dirt road and an inner city street.

“I was surrounded by Country, Folk & Blues music for as long as I can remember,” says East of her musical upbringing.

“Mum would have Bonnie Raitt & Shania Twain playing around the house. Dad being Canadian loved North American folk singers like Neil Young, John Denver and Joni Mitchell. Growing up in a log cabin on a small island in the middle of a lake in Ontario Canada, the music married with the scenery so well and was the perfect soundtrack to my childhood. As I’ve gotten older I’ve been influenced by so much other music but the essence of pure, raw and unrefined musical emotion has always stayed strong within me and is what I try to evoke as an artist.”

2017 saw East follow her ears and move to Melbourne where she has established herself as a regular performer amongst Victoria’s most loved music venues and has opened for Australian music legends Jon Stevens, Travis Collins, Wendy Matthews & Jo Camilleri and The Black Sorrows.

Hayley Mary

Hayley Mary found her footing in the original era of Indie-slease as the formidable front woman of ARIA award winning Sydney band, The Jezabels. When the band went into hiatus, Hayley founded Cult Of Helix, a London-based dystopian electronic concept project which landed on the soundtrack for Netflix ‘You’. During the pandemic Hayley returned to Australia, releasing three solo EP's, The Piss, The Perfume (2020), The Drip (2021) and Fall In Love (2021). These combined her trademark quirky, provocative, romantic lyricism with a more up-beat classic-rock/singer-songwriter style, which Hayley describes as "something lighter and nostalgic, necessary in a darker times", and landed Hayley tours with rock icons Liam Gallagher, Tim Finn and DMA'S.

Her new single One Last Drag, a gothic post-punk, dance-rock banger, may be sonically surprising to some fans, but is just another case in point for those who recognise Hayley Mary as an artist who is unafraid to evolve and go against expectations.

Functional Bottom: An Encore

Functional Bottom: An Encore

A fusion of storytelling, performance, filth, provocation and tears, Functional Bottom is back for one night only.

A darkly humorous exploration of a year in the life of Jessi Ryan – artiste, journalist and hot mess. How else to respond to an ‘anus horribilis’ in the era of the neo-Nazi, including nearly dying on the emergency room table, colon removal and the death of their sugar daddy?

Jessi Ryan turns to art, sex, truth-telling and more to burn this trash pile to the ground. It’s time to take stock of their self-medication carnival, crawl back from the abyss and get to the bottom of it all.

Directed by Anna Piper Scott, Functional Bottom explores, loss, survival and the art of clinging on with exquisitely manicured fingernails. Strap yourselves in for a raw, unapologetic and chaotic experience, where nothing is off limits, and rubber gloves are optional.

RISING: Anito

RISING: Anito

Ancient Filipino ritual funerary gold objects were melted down by the Spanish colonisers and moulded into their crucifixes. Anito speculates a future folklore where this raw material is remoulded into new forms, both sacred and profane.

Megafauna dance deep time. A spectre appears charting the trajectory of humanity and setting it in a reverse spiral. Honouring their roots in Sydney’s underground queer and diasporic club scenes, the collective behind Anito build on their shared histories of costume, puppetry, drag, dance, and experimental electronic music to re-imagine myths and stories for the now.

Presented with Arts House as part of RISING.
