Zaffé

An award-winning immersive theatre experience.

Step through a portal into an abandoned building in Beirut. Tangled knots of power cables and battery-operated candles mark the path. Fluorescent flowers bloom in the dust. There is dancing, singing, ululation, wedding games, gossip, and long-distance video calls, but something is missing.

How does this generation attempt to commemorate what is lost through migration and the passing of time? Together, we will throw a party: to create in the face of loss, root themselves in history, express their resilience, provide for each another, and help each other heal.

Winner of the 2023 Melbourne Fringe Director’s Choice Award and Green Room Award for Best Sound Design and Composition (Independent Theatre).

Edging

Edging

Exploring the intersections of popular culture, border control and queerness, Edging is a new collaboration between APHIDS’ Lara Thoms and artists Sammaneh Pourshafighi and Eden Falk.

Are Virgos really bossy? What’s the best Bette Midler movie? How do you get into the Berghain?

A queer performer shares opinions and asks questions about movie stars, reality TV, gossip, fashion and sex. Though these cultural references might seem fun and flippant, as they unfold it becomes apparent that there is a common thread: they all connect to real Australian border control practices.

Edging interrogates how queerness, popular culture and border control intersect. This powerful pat down uncovers the practices that border protection officials have tried to keep in the closet.

Turning power dynamics on their head in playful and unforgettable ways, this show highlights the absurd and inane ways that institutions execute control.

Cliffhanger

Cliffhanger

A multidisciplinary performance, Cliffhanger examines the Sisyphean task of climbing beyond the interface layer of reality.

Our digital feeds are never-ending cliffhangers, designed to keep us fixed to our screens in a state of dissociative suspension. But unlike more traditional narrative devices, algorithmic narrative tension is perpetual.

In a world where streaming platforms compete with sleep (and win) and tech entrepreneurs half-run NASA, decimate non-algorithmic business, and are complicit in the weaponisation of information, doomscrolling is a mood, and that mood is bad.

From Holly Childs and Angela Goh, with soundtrack by Lithuanian artist Gediminas Žygus, Cliffhanger investigates the metaphorical and literal relevance that the cliffhanger has today, through a broken unfolding of time.

Stu Thomas plays the songs of Tom Waits

Stu Thomas plays the songs of Tom Waits

Stu Thomas - international man of mystery and musical maverick.

He met Tom Waits in a dream, where Tom said to him: "You’re going the right way…”

Stu has been consulting with Mr Waits via ouija board or crystal ball ever since. On occasion, they meet on the astral plane in a bullet train where they share small trays of chicken-fish and green chartreuse.

Via a system of smoke signals and flying trout, they share brain jewels of inspiration. They also co-own a timeshare umbrella in Micronesia.

Stu Thomas plays Tom Waits on Tuesday 12th Nov at The Drunken Poet. Don’t miss it or Medusa will stone you silly.

Digital Echoes

Digital Echoes

A concert for viola, percussion and electronics exploring the transformation of sound, messages and meanings displaced by time and space.

In Digital Echoes, melodic fragments of a viola are sent via internet connection to five different locations around Australia. The captured sound is then sent back to the performance space where it resonates percussion instruments, blending into the live soundscape.

As the viola echoes, bouncing around the country, in and out of the live performance, its journeys create unpredictable timings, mapping the unseeable landscapes of our information highways.

Digital Echoes explores translation and what is lost and gained through coding and decoding. Inviting reflection about the history and future of internet and interstellar communication, this new work from Aaron Wyatt and Speak Percussion combines remarkable technology, contemporary classical music and percussive art to create an enthralling and otherworldly score.

Tickets: $15 - $35
