“James Li: Bridging Technology and People with a Personal Touch”
James Li’s mission is simple: make technology work for people. As a software engineer by trade, James’s journey into software development was sparked by a deep desire to create a better life for his family. That vision led him to launch his business, Math Song, which not only reflects his professional passion but is also a heartfelt tribute to his two daughters.
“M-A-T-H and S-O-N-G are the initials of my daughters’ Chinese names,” James explains with a smile. “When you think about computing, math is the foundation, and I love how ‘song’ ties in—it’s about bringing harmony, creating something beautiful, like music.”
In March 2023, James made the bold decision to move from Beijing to Melbourne. His goal: to establish a thriving business and, eventually, bring his wife and children to join him in Australia. Initially, he ventured into exporting, leveraging his connections back home. “It seemed easier at the time to tap into those relationships, rather than trying to find clients here in Australia,” he reflects. “But my real passion has always been in IT and software development, and I've always wanted to pursue this field here in Australia.”
After speaking with many business owners and understanding their pain points, James honed in on two key ways his business could help. “One area I focus on is automating tasks and streamlining processes for businesses. That’s where my efforts are concentrated—helping businesses scale without getting bogged down by administrative work.”
But his work doesn't stop there. “I also collaborate with businesses to build something from the ground up, whether it’s a web app or a mobile app, something they can turn around and sell themselves. It’s about creating value and driving growth.”
James's years of experience in both software development and project management give him a unique edge. "Having that mix of technical expertise and business acumen allows me to offer faster feedback and improve project outcomes," he says. “I’m all about reducing friction, increasing efficiency, and ensuring things get done right—quickly and effectively.”
With Math Song, James is committed to simplicity and accessibility. “I’ve worked across so many industries—from waste management to tourism, even private swimming schools. Every business, no matter the industry, uses software in some way, and I want to create solutions that empower my clients. I never want them to feel overwhelmed by the technology. Instead, I want them to feel confident and in control."
For James, software development isn’t just about coding—it’s about problem-solving and making a real impact. “At the end of the day,” he says thoughtfully, “my job is about making people’s lives easier and their businesses better. That’s what keeps me going.”
