Image Science is a one-of-a-kind business in Australia - a digital fine art printing studio that also retails the high-end equipment with which the studio produces its prints.
Jeremy Daalder started Image Science in 2002 after a stint as a photographer in London.
“In the UK, I could easily access affordable, high-quality photography printing services. But when I returned to Australia to study photography, I was shocked!” he remembers. “The cost of the same services here was almost ten times higher than in London.”
Fuelled by the desire to help Australian creatives access the same printing services available overseas, Jeremy used his unique background in computing and artificial intelligence to pioneer digital fine art printing in this country.
“Digital fine art printing didn’t really exist in Australia in the early 2000s,” he says. “We essentially created the industry here and now lots of businesses offer similar services. But no one operates in the same way we do.”
Today, Image Science offers fine art printing, high quality art digitisation, and colour management services, as well as being a retail supplier of the same high-end equipment used in-house. They have also taken on an education and mentorship role in the industry they helped to start.
Run by a small team of just four people, the Image Science team has been deliberately kept small, so they can provide the personal touch and high-service experience their clients love.
As an example, renowned Melbourne-based painter Jeremy Geddes has trusted Image Science to produce thousands of prints for him over the last fifteen years.
“It’s a partnership,” says Jeremy. “For artists like Geddes, we’re not just printers—we’re part of their creative process and a way for them to make a living from their art.”
Image Science has also worked with high-profile names like LGBTQIA+ artist Ross Watson and National Geographic photographer Jason Edwards.
No matter who walks through the door, every project is handled with the utmost care and precision.
“Our goal from the start was to be world-class,” Jeremy shares. “And now we’re known globally for our expertise and the quality of our work.”
Due to a need to achieve a better work-life balance, Jeremy and his wife, Amy, have recently handed the reigns over to new owner James McGill, after 23 years of dedication.
Having run multiple print businesses in the past, James is well positioned to lead Image Science into the future, with many ideas for innovation and expansion.
“I know I’m stepping into big shoes”, says James, “but I do so with total respect for what’s been built and a real passion for where we can go next. The same commitment to quality and care that brought our clients here remains at the heart of everything we do.”
