The current body of paintings by Rachel Coad tap into the threads of our collective memory. Her subjects are from a school photograph from the early 1900s. The scale of the source image is miniscule, the boy heads only millimetres high. Their beguiling features and earnest expressions became accessible only through magnification. Once lost to obscurity, the faces brought back into present perception through Coad’s enquiry. Punchy, powerful, and moody these paintings reclaim figures from ambiguity to present certainty.
