Seven Deaf artists reflect upon their relationship with signed stories and Audism.
Stories are the bedrock on which any culture founds itself, but how does their telling shape that culture?
Deaf artists find themselves having to prove themselves as equals to their hearing counterparts every day, but this Audism ignores the potential that these artists have to create work that hearing artists can’t.
Catherine Dunn and Sam Martin will work with five Deaf artists, throughout their Warehouse Residency to explore the significance and promise of signed stories. Their residency will create a culturally safe space to experiment, share skills and create. They will pay attention to the intersectional experiences of Deaf artists, from disability to culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
The culmination of the residency will be a public performance evening and artist discussion that imagines the future of Deaf theatre and beyond.
