Yarraville-based artist Matthew Simpson has had two other solo exhibitions at the One Star Gallery: Aleatory Paintings in 2023 and Stochastic Paintings in 2022
Chance Paintings 2024 features new works of randomly arranged lines. The paintings have random titles of geological features that are not represented by the contents of the painting. Chance and intuition play prominent roles in their creation.
There is both an applied artistic direction of balancing natural rhythms from the chaos of lines and the random application of marks in an automated fashion. Matthew’s intention is to rein in jarring disorder by intuitively following the dictates of pleasing arrangements that arise.
